Des Moines man charged with eluding, traffic offenses after leading police on car chase

Des Moines police were investigating a drive-by shooting when the pursuit began. Later, police reported there was no evidence of gunfire.

DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines man faces multiple charges after leading police on a car chase that ultimately ended in a crash near Mitchellville, according to police.

Sgt. Paul Parizek with Des Moines police told Local 5 officers responded to a report of a drive-by shooting on Guthrie Avenue just before 4 a.m. Wednesday.

While investigating the alleged shooting, police saw 21-year-old Zander Mortale quickly drive away, leading officers on a car chase. The pursuit ended when Mortale crashed the car into a median on eastbound Interstate 80 near Mitchellville. 

Mortale is charged with eluding and reckless driving, as well as three other traffic-related offenses.

No evidence of gunfire was found at the scene of the reported drive-by shooting, according to Parizek. The investigation is ongoing. 

Mortale is currently being held at the Polk County Jail.
