DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines police officer is in recovery after being assaulted Wednesday.

Senior Police Officer Steve Walters, a 26-year-veteran of the department, sustained a "significant head injury" during an arrest, DMPD said on Facebook.

Walters was investigating an incident in which 33-year-old Dametres Bloch allegedly threatened to kill employees at a downtown business while displaying a knife.

Walters located Bloch around 1:30 p.m. As Walters attempted to take him into custody, Bloch resisted the arrest and "violently head-butted" Walters.

Bloch was eventually arrested and is currently being held at Polk County Jail. He faces the following charges:

  • Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations — Bodily Injury
  • Harassment in the First Degree
  • Assault Causing Injury — Peace Officers/Others
  • Violation of Probation
  • Willful Injury — Causing Serious Injury

Walters was hospitalized for his injuries.
