Des Moines police identify victim in fatal overnight stabbing

24-year-old Brantlee Austin Gage Rainey has been arrested and charged with Murder in the First Degree.

Des Moines police say a woman has died after being stabbed overnight on the east side of town.

Crews responded to the Econo Lodge on E 30th Street around 2:30 a.m. This is across the street from the Iowa State Fairgrounds. 

Police found the victim, identified as 20-year-old Alyssa Anne Maher stabbed with multiple traumatic injuries.

"At this time, there is no indication of any ongoing danger or threat to the neighborhood," police said in a release.

Police have arrested 24-year-old Brantlee Austin Gage Rainey. He is charged with Murder in the First Degree.

Rainey was allegedly found by officers in the room where the stabbing happened and had a knife "with apparent blood on it," police said in an update Tuesday morning. Police added he matched a witness description of the suspect.

DMPD says this is the city's 13th homicide of 2023.
