Suspect charged with attempted murder in one of multiple Sunday shootings in Des Moines

Police have not indicated if the shootings were connected.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines Police have arrested a suspect in one of the three shooting incidents Sunday, which hospitalized a total of five people.

46-year-old Copa Logan McMains of Des Moines has been charged with attempted murder and going armed with intent after she allegedly shot a man in the face.

Officers arrived to an apartment complex near the 3800 block of MLK Jr. Parkway around 2 p.m. Sunday for a reported shooting.

According to police, a 26-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his face was located. The man was transported to a local hospital and remains hospitalized, but is expected to survive.

That shooting incident came after Des Moines Police had already responded to two other shooting incidents earlier in the day.

Police first responded to East Ovid Avenue at around 12:43 a.m. Sunday after receiving a report of a person being shot.

When they arrived, officers found a 36-year-old man with a gunshot injury. Medics transported the man to a local hospital, where he remains in serious condition.

Witnesses at the scene told police a dispute had occurred between people prior to the shooting.

Less than an hour later, officers responded to Ashworth Park at 1:31 a.m. to investigate reports of another shooting.

Police found a 34-year-old woman with a gunshot injury in the parking lot of the park. First responders performed lifesaving measures at the scene before transporting her to a local hospital. The woman remains in critical condition.

Shortly after the initial calls, two 19-year-old men with gunshot injuries arrived at a local hospital by private vehicle. Both men were hospitalized in serious condition.

Witnesses on the scene of the second shooting told police the incident occurred "during a large gathering of people in the parking lot", according to a press release.

Police have not indicated if the shootings were connected.
