DES MOINES, Iowa — One person is dead and another is in critical condition following a shooting in a northern Des Moines residence Friday night.

Authorities said an adult male person of interest was taken into custody when Polk County deputies initially arrived on scene.

Shortly before 10:30 p.m. Friday, the Polk County Sheriff's Office announced that 24-year-old Hamza Smajlovic has been charged with murder in the first-degree, attempted murder and intimidation with a dangerous weapon.

Officials say Smajlovic resided in the home where the incident took place.

Capt. Ryan Evans of the sheriff's office said the first deputy was on scene at the 245 NW 51st Place residence at 5:24 p.m., just 3 minutes after shots were reported in the home.

An adult man and an adult woman were discovered with gunshot wounds and quickly transported to the hospital. The female victim later died and the male victim remains in serious condition.

Nothing has been released about their identities at this time, pending notification of family members.

Multiple people were in the house at the time of the incident, but it is unknown what any of their connections to each other are at this time.

Smajlovic is currently in custody at Polk County Jail.
