DMPD: Suspect charged with attempted murder following Sunday stabbing

DES MOINES, Iowa — A man is in custody after allegedly stabbing someone Sunday morning, according to Des Moines police. 

26-year-old Jimmy Padilla Castro is charged with Attempted Murder, a Class B felony. The suspect is currently being held at Polk County Jail.

Officers responded to an apartment complex on Virginia Avenue around 7 a.m. Sunday to investigate a reported stabbing. 

By the time they arrived, the suspect had left the building. The victim, a 23-year-old man, had already been transported to a local hospital. 

The victim suffered "serious injuries" to his head and neck, but is expected to survive, according to police. He remains hospitalized as of Monday morning. 

After interviewing witnesses and examining evidence, police identified Castro as the suspect. 

Officers located Castro in a car on E. Park Avenue around 5:30 p.m. Sunday. He was taken into custody without incident.

Editor's Note: While police have identified the suspect as Jimmy Padilla Castro, there is no person by that exact name currently being held in Polk County Jail, according to the website. However, there is a man with a similar name matching the description of the suspect. Local 5 is working to confirm the suspect's name.
