DMPD: Domestic violence suspect in custody after crash

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police arrested a domestic violence suspect following a crash that caused serious injury Saturday afternoon.

DMPD officers responded to a report of a domestic fight between a man and his female partner at a residence in the 2700 block of E. Grand Avenue around 2:44 p.m., according to a news release.

As officers arrived, witnesses saw 31-year-old Alonzo Cortez Hickman leaving the scene in his vehicle. As he left, police could not catch up to him.

Hickman was next seen driving westbound in the 2700 block of Lyon Street. According to DMPD, he then ran a stop sign at the intersection of E. 26th Street and Lyon Street and crashed into a southbound vehicle driven by a woman.

Officers arrested Hickman at the scene. 

Both drivers were transported to local hospitals where Hickman was treated and released. 

The injured woman remains hospitalized in serious condition, officials say.

He has been charged with the following offenses:

  • Serious Injury By Motor Vehicle - Reckless Driving (Class D felony)
  • Domestic Abuse Assault (Simple Misdemeanor)
  • Failure To Obey A Traffic Control Device (Simple Misdemeanor)
  • No Insurance (Simple Misdemeanor)

The DMPD traffic unit is investigating the crash.
