DMPD respond to a shooting incident near UnityPoint Methodist

One victim is known to have been shot in the leg.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police department responded to a shooting that took place at approximately 7:07 p.m. Friday near a basketball court at 926 Oakridge Drive which left a 17-year-old male "critically injured" after being shot in the leg.

The victim was transported to UnityPoint Methodist Medical Center and is in a reported critical but stable condition.

 Officers at the scene were said to be managing a crowd.

According to DMPD the suspect fled the scene, but is said to be a 6-foot tall Black man who ran towards Iowa Methodist Medical Center. DMPD said the suspect fled the scene and is not in custody.

Police said that the incident has no indication of being random, but they that the incident should not pose any further threat of safety to the neighborhood.

DMPD said it will continue its investigation.
