Des Moines police identify 21-year-old man killed in Sunday shooting

As of Tuesday afternoon, the suspect is being held in the Polk County Jail on a $1 million cash bond.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police have identified the victim of a deadly shooting that took place Sunday afternoon.

Police and fire personnel responded to a residence on South Union Street at around 1:40 p.m. Sunday.

When they arrived, first responders found 21-year-old Tariq Reynolds of Des Moines suffering from gunshot wounds. Reynolds was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died, officials say. Police located a gun at the scene of the crime.

Police arrested 19-year-old Martavius Lamon Green of Atlanta, Georgia on Monday morning. He is charged with first-degree murder.

Preliminary investigation indicates Green was involved in an argument with someone else at the scene of the shooting, Des Moines police said in a press release. Police believe the argument became physical, at which time Reynolds attempted to intervene before he was shot.

Court documents indicate Green shot Reynolds twice in the upper torso. The documents also say Green told investigators he had used the gun found at the scene to shoot Reynolds.

Reynolds' death marks Des Moines' eighth homicide of 2024.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Green is being held in the Polk County Jail on a $1 million cash bond. Detectives continue to investigate the incident.
