Exclusive: Brazen store break-in caught on camera

Bradley Thompson said their camera captured two people breaking into their store early Monday morning. He shared the surveillance video exclusively with Local 5.

DES MOINES, Iowa — A sneaker store is out thousands of dollars worth of merchandise after two people broke in early Monday morning, according to its owner.

Bradley Thompson owns Kulture Kingz on the north side of Des Moines on E. 14th Street, near Euclid Avenue.

Thompson said their camera captured two people breaking into their store early Monday morning. He shared the surveillance video exclusively with Local 5.

"I was stressed when I woke up this morning, that's for sure," Thompson said.

It wasn't an alarm Thompson was expecting to hear early Monday morning when he woke up to alerts about what was going on at his store on the north side.

"Two individuals went ahead and shattered our front window. They broke in and they did steal some merchandise," Thompson told Local 5.

The surveillance video shows two people smashing the window and pushing in the gate. They then jump in and swipe some merchandise before taking off.

"Roughly about 50-ish t-shirts. We're still working on some information though, but it's close to about $10,000 worth though," said Thompson. "They definitely seemed like they knew what they were doing. It wasn't their first time."

Des Moines Police said they did get a call to that address early Monday morning. Thompson said despite the break-in, he's thankful his alarm system worked and praised DMPD officers for arriving quickly.

"We were notified instantly with phone calls, emails, text messages. The police were also on scene within 5 minutes which was really awesome," said Thompson.

Now, he hopes the people responsible are found.

"Just, you know, annoyed. It is what it is. It's kind of a part of thing that comes with retail but just very frustrating. We're a small local business. We're just trying to help the sneaker community as much as we can. We don't do anything bad to anyone," Thompson told Local 5.

He said their team worked fast Monday morning to get the front window replaced and they'll continue with business as usual, not letting this deter them.
