Trial set to begin for second suspect in deadly December 2022 crash

In December 2022, Robert Miller and Keith Jones were allegedly "street racing" when one car drove over the median and killed 4 year-old Marcos Faguada.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Jury selections begin Monday for the trial of the second suspect involved in a deadly drag racing incident that occurred last December.

Keith Jones is facing six criminal charges in connection to the Dec. 13, 2022 crash that killed 4-year-old Marcos Faguada:

  • Homicide by Vehicle — Operating While Intoxicated
  • Homicide by Vehicle — Reckless Driving
  • Homicide by Vehicle — Drag Racing
  • Serious Injury by Operating Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated
  • Serious Injury by Reckless Driving
  • Leaving the scene of an accident causing death

The trial comes just months after Robert Miller III, another driver involved in the crash, was found guilty on all counts and sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Prior to the crash in December, Jones and Miller were seen leaving a bar.

Witnesses later described seeing the two drivers "street racing" in the northbound lanes of Fleur Drive. Miller drove his car over the median, hitting two cars, injuring two people and killing Marcos Faguada.

Jones allegedly left the scene following the crash.

During Miller's trial, the court heard powerful testimony from crash victims.

"The first thing I heard was screaming and just, as a mom, I ran to that and then I saw the kids," Jennifer Blanchard, a crash victim, said on the stand in May.

Throughout Miller's trial, evidence leading to the verdict included a timeline of events leading up to the crash, as well as photos taken after the crash. All of this evidence, including witness testimonies, could be seen again in Jones' trial.

Last December, Local 5 spoke with Marcos's family following the tragedy.

"This feeling is indescribable. You know, I feel like I'm drowning in a sea of pain," said Wilbert Faguada, the father of Marcos Faguada.
