Fort Dodge police locate person of interest in December homicide

37-year-old David Dayton of Fort Dodge is now in custody for a parole violation.

FORT DODGE, Iowa — Fort Dodge police have located a person of interest in a recent shooting death.

37-year-old David Dayton of Fort Dodge was taken into custody on a parole violation Wednesday. Police had previously indicated Dayton was wanted for questioning in connection to the death of 45-year-old Ryan Andrews.

After receiving information on Dayton's whereabouts Wednesday, police executed a search warrant at a home in Bode at around 1:15 p.m. Law enforcement attempted to make contact with Dayton, but were initially unsuccessful.

"Multiple tactics were utilized to manage the incident and safeguard the well-being of both Mr. Dayton, the community, and law enforcement," Fort Dodge police said in a press release.

Eventually, Dayton exited the residence and was taken into custody. Police say there is no ongoing threat to public safety.

These latest updates come just a few weeks after police found Andrews lying unresponsive in a yard, having suffered a gunshot wound. Andrews later died at a nearby hospital. His death has since been labeled a homicide.

Webster County Crime Stoppers offered a $750 reward to anyone with information on Dayton's whereabouts.
