Iowa State fraternity member accused of extorting student for sex sentenced to probation

Another fraternity member involved in the case had his charges dismissed.

AMES, Iowa — One of the three Iowa State students accused of extorting another student for sex has been sentenced to probation, according to court documents.

Grant Kuehnast is sentenced to two years probation and must pay a fine of $855. In addition, Kuehnast is ordered to complete a mental health evaluation within 60 days of his sentencing.

Kuehnast was originally charged with second-degree harassment and extortion, before eventually accepting a plea deal in which he pleaded guilty to first-degree harassment.

These updates come more than six months after Local 5 first reported on the assault.

Back in January, Kuehnast and two other suspects, Tyler Ekstrom and Colton Moore, were all members of FarmHouse Fraternity at Iowa State University.

Court documents indicate the three suspects entered a fellow fraternity member's room, where Kuehnast tried to use an airsoft gun to force the student to perform a sex act on Moore.

When the victim did not perform the sex act, Kuehnast fired the airsoft gun into the air, according to court documents.

Police say Moore "aided in the crime" by laying on his back to receive the sex act.

Additionally, court documents say the victim asked Ekstrom for help multiple times, as Ekstrom was serving as the vice president and risk manager of the fraternity. In response to his pleas, Ekstrom responded, "I'm just here to make sure you don't get shot."

Ekstrom had his charges dismissed on Friday.

Moore has pleaded not guilty to all three charges. His trial is set to begin Jan. 9.
