JASPER COUNTY, Iowa — A former Jasper County employee is accused of misusing county funds for her own personal benefit, according to the Jasper County Sheriff's Office.

31-year-old Shelby Hobbs of Newton was arrested Wednesday and charged with theft and 11 counts of forgery.

County officials believe Hobbs is responsible for using approximately $17,458.41 for "unauthorized expenses."

According to criminal complaints, Hobbs allegedly took the money over a span of 11 months, writing a total of 42 checks to herself using her employer's checkbook. Officials say Hobbs forged her supervisor's signature on the checks before cashing or depositing them into her personal account.

Hobbs previously served as office coordinator for the Jasper County Community Development Department. As of Wednesday morning, Hobbs is no longer listed on the website.

Hobbs is currently being held in the Jasper County Jail.
