DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines man convicted in a drag racing crash that killed a 4-year-old last December was sentenced to up to 16 years in prison on Thursday.
Keith Jones was found guilty in early November of six criminal charges in connection to the Dec. 13, 2022 crash that killed 4-year-old Marcos Faguada:
- Homicide by Vehicle — Drag Racing
- Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated (two counts)
- Reckless Driving (two counts)
- Leaving the Scene of an Accident Causing Death
The 48-year-old was sentenced to one year in prison or Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated, 30 days for Reckless Driving, five years for Homicide by Vehicle — Drag Racing and 10 years for Leaving the Scene of an Accident Causing Death, totaling a maximum of 16 years and 30 days.
Jones will also have to pay $150,000 in restitution to the Faguada family. There is no mandatory minimum prison sentence for the five or 10-year sentences.
The other suspect, Robert Miller III, was found guilty in June on five charges, including vehicular homicide. He was sentenced to 30 years.
Prosecutors said the pair drank together before speeding on Fleur Drive, weaving in and out of cars and ultimately leading to the crash that killed Faguada and injured others.
