DICKINSON COUNTY, Iowa — The trial of a man accused of shooting and killing an Algona police officer begins Monday in Dickinson County.
Kyle Ricke faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of Ofc. Kevin Cram. If convicted, Ricke would spend the rest of his life in prison.
Cram was on patrol one evening last September when he was informed of an arrest warrant against Ricke. Cram located Ricke in a residential area of town and attempted to make an arrest. Ricke allegedly shot Cram shortly after.
Cram worked in law enforcement for ten years, first with the Nora Springs Police Department followed by the Algona Police Department.
"Police officer Kevin Cram died because he answered the call to serve. Algona police officer Kevin Cram died because he chose to be a beacon of light," Iowa Department of Public Safety Commissioner Stephen Bayens said in September. "Algona police officer Kevin Cram died because he was willing to stand in the gap between good and evil. Algona police officer Kevin Cram died a hero."
Ricke's trial has been pushed back several times. Last month, his attorneys filed a motion to continue the trial due to the impacts of flooding in northwest Iowa for a member of the defense team and potential jurors.
