Sheriff's office identifies 2 people killed in Friday morning shooting

The two men were "known to each other" prior to the shooting, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said in a release.

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Polk County Sheriff's Office has identified the two people killed in a Friday morning shooting along NE 17th Street.

The sheriff's office got a call around 6:45 a.m. Friday of a shooting in the 5100 block of NE 17th Street. Their investigation found that one male shot the other and then himself and that both died on the scene.

Officials said the shooting was an "isolated incident", and on Monday, identified the two deceased as 33-year-old Francisco Leonel Rivera Cosme of Des Moines and 31-year-old Alexis Manuel Lopez Rivera of West Des Moines.

The sheriff's office said Lopez Rivera shot Rivera Cosme.

"Investigators in the case have discovered the victim and suspect were known to each other prior to the incident," the sheriff's office said Monday. "Investigators continue their work to establish a motive for the incident.

The investigation remains ongoing.
