DMPD reports arrest in city's 7th homicide case of 2024

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police reported the arrest of 43-year-old Des Moines resident James Bernard Johnson Saturday afternoon following the homicide of 42-year old Nikki Loffredo.

DMPD initially responded to the report of a shooting at the intersection of Cambridge Street and Ovid Avenue early July 27, finding Loffredo with multiple gunshot wounds to her legs.

Lifesaving measures and tourniquets were used and she was transported to UnityPoint - Methodist Medical Center for treatment where she remained until her death the evening of Aug. 2.

Police began their investigation gathering witness testimony and evidence, and soon arrested Johnson who is charged with the following:

  • Murder - 1st Degree 
  • Felon In Possession Of A Firearm 

Authorities said their investigation revealed that Loffredo was walking along Cambridge Street before Johnson, who was driving in the area, stopped near her. 

DMPD said that video evidence shows Johnson shooting Loffredo at least three times before speeding off.

Johnson is being held at the Polk County Jail.

DMPD said that it is continuing to investigate at this time, and more information will be released as necessary.
