One person is dead and several others are injured following a late-night shooting Tuesday in Des Moines, police said in a press release.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting at The Residences at River View, an apartment complex located on SE 1st Street, at around 11:35 p.m. Tuesday. The apartments are near Principal Park, across the street from Mullets.

When they arrived, police found two people with gunshot wounds inside an apartment. Officers provided first aid to both victims before they were transported to the hospital.

One of the people shot, 18-year-old Jacob Matthew Brown of Des Moines, later died of his injuries. Police did not add what they believe Brown's role in the incident was, or who the shooter is believed to be.

"We're confident that this was a targeted event," said Sgt. Paul Parizek with DMPD. "This was not a random home invasion or anything like that."

Two other victims later showed up at the hospital after being transported by private vehicles. Officers determined both victims were injured in Tuesday night's shooting incident, raising questions for investigators.

Police say there is no ongoing danger to the neighborhood.

The three injured victims have been identified as a 16-year-old man, a 27-year-old man and a 19-year-old man. All three remain hospitalized as of Wednesday afternoon.

“When we are able to connect with these people who have been shot and figure out what happened there, we'll be able to put it all together," Parizek added.

This is Des Moines' first homicide of 2024.
