One person dead in shooting near Union Labor Park, Polk County Sheriff's Office says

People were gathered at Union Labor Park for the Biggz Big World event, a music festival raising awareness about mental health.

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Polk County Sheriff's Office said one person is dead after a shooting near Union Labor Park Friday night.

Police responded to 4640 NW Morningstar Dr. for a gunshot injury to the chest around 7:22 p.m., according to the Des Moines police scanner.

According to a news release, deputies began life saving measures on the victim until emergency medical services could arrive. The victim did not survive and was pronounced dead on the scene.

People were gathered at Union Labor Park for the Biggz Big World event, a hip-hop festival raising awareness about mental health.

Polk County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Lt. Shane Grego told Local 5 that no details about the victim are known. 

The sheriff's office is investigating the incident as a homicide, and no suspect has been identified.

Local 5 received a message from someone who said they were a witness to the incident.

As they were enjoying the show, the witness said they heard gunshots and saw a flash before people scattered. 

The witness saw the victim on the ground with people trying to help them. As they were moving away from the entrance, they said they heard more gunshots before they ran to their car.

"It was so sad….people were having so much fun. I seen it, heard it and felt it and then boom," the witness said.

Grego said it is "still very early" and anyone with information should contact the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
