Ottumwa police have arrested a suspect in connection to a stabbing death that occurred earlier this month.
60-year-old Gary Lewis Scott of Ottumwa was arrested Thursday morning and charged with the following:
- Murder in the First Degree
- Willful Injury
- Assault While Participating in a Felony
- Going Armed with Intent
The arrest comes just 10 days after police responded to reports of a stabbing near a home on Ward Street. Outside of the house, they found 34-year-old Samuel Gallegos-Ramirez of Ottumwa, who had been stabbed.
Crews transported Gallegos-Ramirez to the Ottumwa Regional Health Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and Ottumwa police investigated the incident, eventually finding that Scott and Gallegos-Ramirez had an "altercation" at some point.
"Preliminary information at the scene of the incident did not immediately identify all of the circumstances that led to the death of the victim," Lt. Jason Bell said in a press release. "Investigators were eventually able to identify that an altercation took place between the victim and the suspect which resulted in the filing of the criminal charges."
