Iowa man arrested after allegedly killing Nebraska priest, police say

The suspect is currently being held without bond at Washington County Corrections Facility in Nebraska.

FORT CALHOUN, Neb. — A Sioux City man is in custody after allegedly assaulting and killing a Nebraska priest, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office in Blair, Nebraska. 

43-year-old Kierre L. Williams was arrested and charged with the following: 

  • 1st Degree Murder
  • Use of a Weapon to Commit a Felony

The arrest comes after deputies responded to a report of an attempted break-in at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church rectory in Fort Calhoun at around 5:05 a.m. Sunday. 

When they arrived, law enforcement found Father Steven Guttsel with apparent stab wounds. Williams was also located inside the residence. 

Guttsel was transported to a local hospital, but later died of his injuries. 

Williams was taken to the Washington County Corrections Facility, where he is being held without bond.
