DES MOINES, Iowa — A Des Moines teenager has pleaded guilty to multiple charges in connection to a fatal crash that killed an elderly couple in November 2023, according to the Polk County Attorney's Office.
19-year-old Kameron Wright pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of vehicular homicide by reckless driving and one count of operating while intoxicated in the deaths of 76-year-old Fred Lehman and his wife, 79-year-old Mary Lehman.
Wright entered a plea agreement which calls for the vehicular homicide sentences to be served consecutively, for a total of 20 years in prison.
The plea comes more than a year after the deadly crash on Nov. 12, 2023, when Wright's car collided with the Lehmans' car. Data pulled from Wright's vehicle showed he was traveling at 112 mph right before the crash.
The Polk County Attorney's Office said Wright admitted to a judge he was driving recklessly and had marijuana in his system at the time of the crash.
Fred and Mary were married for 57 years and had four children, 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren, according to their obituary. Local 5 spoke to their daughter, Lyndsay, in the days after the crash.
"To be loved by them was to have been loved by God himself," she said in November 2023. "That is what we hope to carry forward."
Wright's sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 13, 2025. He is also required to pay $300,000 in total restitution.
"The parties will argue whether he is granted a suspended sentence with a term of probation of three years or is sentenced to prison," the attorney's office added.
