WEBSTER CITY, Iowa — A Webster City man is charged with murder after allegedly killing a 10-month-old baby in April 2023, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said in a press release.
Webster City officials responded to a report of a 10-month-old having a medical emergency around 1:45 a.m. on April 16, 2023, according to a criminal complaint.
The baby's mother, who made the 911 call, said her son was unresponsive and "cold to the touch", the criminal complaint states.
First responders provided emergency medical care and transported the baby to a local hospital, where doctors observed "unusual bruising consistent with inflicted child abuse."
Due to the severity of his injuries, the baby was transferred to Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines, where he later died.
The Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death as multiple blunt force injuries to the baby's head.
Following an investigation conducted by Iowa DCI and Webster City police, 26-year-old Gunner Jones was charged with first-degree murder in the baby's death.
The criminal complaint states that both Jones and the baby's mother reported there were "no apparent medical issues" with the baby when the mother went to sleep. Both Jones and the baby's mother also told investigators Jones remained awake with the baby, making him the only one alone with the infant that morning.
