AMES, Iowa — Ames Community School District Superintendent Dr. Julious Lawson announced his resignation Sunday.
Lawson submitted his resignation on Jan. 25, according to a statement from Ames School Board President Kelly Winfrey.
"We are sad to lose Dr. Lawson, but we are thankful for the great work he has done," Winfrey writes. "He is leaving the District better than he found it."
Lawson was named superintendent back in January 2022, although his official duties began in July 2022.
Winfrey cited "unforeseen family matters" as the reason for Lawson's resignation.
“Serving this community has been an incredibly rewarding experience and a highlight of my career," Lawson said in a statement.
Lawson's resignation comes as he was recently named superintendent of the Zion Elementary School District 6 in eastern Illinois.
Prior to his time in Ames, Lawson served as Chief of Schools for Chicago Public Schools, according to his staff biography.
Lawson's final day with the Ames Community School District will be June 30. In the meantime, Lawson plans to work to ensure a smooth transition between himself and his successor.
The school board will discuss the search for a new superintendent at its meeting on Feb. 5.
