Police investigating threat of violence directed at Des Moines high school

"We’ve been informed by police that it was not a credible threat but will continue to monitor as a precaution," DMPS spokesperson Phil Roeder told Local 5.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police are investigating a threat of violence directed at a local high school, the department said on X.

A spokesperson for Des Moines Public Schools said the threat was posted to social media on Friday.

"We’ve been informed by police that it was not a credible threat but will continue to monitor as a precaution," DMPS spokesperson Phil Roeder told Local 5. "This is another example of online activity schools deal with that cause unnecessary concern and use of public safety resources."

Roeder notes the threat was seemingly directed at East High School, though DMPS Public Safety is not certain the threat was referencing Des Moines.

Des Moines police were unable to confirm East High School was the target of the threat due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Police plan to collaborate with DMPS on "enhanced security measures" when school resumes Monday.

"We will provide an increased presence where needed, as needed," a DMPD spokesperson told Local 5.
