Gnats becoming an issue in Iowa

EDGEWOOD – If pesky gnats are bugging you, you’re not alone. An entomologist is calling this the worst gnat outbreak in recent years.

But normal solutions like a simple spray might not be enough. Stores like Hy-Vee can’t keep the product “Bug Soother” on the shelves. 

Tracy Kading, a manager for Hy-Vee says, he normally calls other stores, but that wasn’t even an option this time. So he got in his truck and drove an hour to the “Bug Soother” headquarters in Columbus Junction to pickup 300 cases. Kading says it’s the first time he’s had to make a bug run.

“I always say it’s the right item, at the right time, at the right place,” Kading said. “So when all the customers are looking for it, you got to have it.       

An entomologist with Iowa State University says those nasty gnats you’re seeing are black flies.
They don’t carry any diseases for humans, but the bites are still bothersome. 

The good news is that the gnats will go away in a couple of weeks. The bad news is the mosquitos are coming after that.
