AUDUBON, Iowa — UPDATE: The boil advisory for Audubon was lifted on Sunday.

"The advisory was issued due to a water main break when a contractor hit a main near the city water tower, resulting in pressure loss. Nearly 1200 connections were affected by the break," the Iowa Department of Natural Resources said in a release.

The city of Audubon is under a boil advisory Friday due to a water main break.

The incident happened late Friday morning after a contractor hit a main near the city's water tower, which resulted in pressure loss, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

"Please conserve water as much as possible until further notice," the city wrote on Facebook. "This includes no watering or washing vehicles."

Nearly 1,200 connections are affected by the break, Iowa DNR reports. City officials have isolated the affected area, and have shut down the water treatment plant until repairs are complete.

Officials do not believe the water quality has been compromised, but Audubon residents should still boil any water that will be consumed or used in food preparation. Under the boil advisory, water should be boiled for two minutes before being cooled to allow for further use.

Water is safe for showering, laundry, general washing, and outdoor use without boiling.

Iowa DNR will collect two sets of bacteria samples for testing. The boil advisory will be lifted once two consecutive sets of bacterial samples have tested negative for bacteria.

City officials will notify Audubon residents when the boil order is lifted via radio, the city website, Facebook and the city marquis.
