Greenfield, Orient and Fontanelle under boil order after water main break

The boil advisory was issued after a water main break and pressure loss event.

ADAIR COUNTY, Iowa — A boil advisory was issued by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for select Adair County communities Monday evening. 

The advisory was put in place after a water main break. The break occurred at approximately 4 p.m. on Monday when a contractor hit a main near Greenfield's water tower, which lead to a pressure loss. 

Repairs are underway, and the leak has been isolated. The DNR says once repairs are finished, the area will be disinfected and flushed.

The issue affects Greenfield along with the nearby communities of Fontanelle and Orient, due to the shared water source at Southern Iowa Rural Water Association (SIRWA) #1. Affected residents were notified on Facebook pages and postings in public spaces.

Customers are encouraged to boil water that will be consumed or used for food prep. Water should be boiled for two minutes and allowed to cool down before being used. Water is safe for bathing, laundry, general washing and outdoor use without boiling.

Bacteria samples will be collected by officials for testing, and the advisory will be lifted when bacterial samples have tested negative for bacteria.
