MASSENA, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced Thursday evening that the city of Massena is under a boil order until further notice.
This comes after low chlorine levels throughout the distribution system were measured.
The city replaced its chlorine injection pump, and the system needs to be disinfected and flushed according to the DNR.
Water quality may not be compromised, but officials have announced the boil order as a precaution.
If water is to be consumed or used in food preparation, it is recommended to be boiled for at least two minutes and allowed to cool.
Water is safe to use for showering, laundry and general cleaning among other things not associated with ingestion.
Once chlorine levels have returned to normal two bacteria tests will be collected, and if two consecutive sets of bacterial samples test negative for bacteria, the boil order will be lifted.
