Des Moines ChildServe to relocate and expand, increasing capacity from 60 to 600 children

The location currently on Woodland Avenue is preparing to move to a location on the corner of 48th Street and Franklin Avenue.

DES MOINES, Iowa — ChildServe announced Monday it will begin renovating a facility that its current Des Moines location will eventually move into, providing the ability to help 10 times as many children as the current facility.

The organization's new facility at 1750 48th Street will see an anticipated start of renovation in the early half of 2025. The location will see Des Moines ChildServe move from the current Woodland Avenue facility's 9,000 square feet of space to the new location's 20,000.

This would increase capacity from 60 children to 600.

Along with an increased capacity, a Neurobehavioral Clinic will be added.

The future facility comes as a result of the successful Growing Together Campaign in which $10 million was raised from more than 90 donors and community members, the organization said.

"The Growing Together Campaign was about building a new Des Moines campus that would have 10 times the impact on children and families being served when compared to the current facility,” said Tom Mahoney, ChildServe Des Moines Campaign Chair, Board of Trustees Member and Past President and ITA Group Board Chairman.

Currently, ChildServe said its Des Moines facility offers Medical Childcare, which they say is the only program in the state that provides weekday care for children with complex needs. Much of what it offers is in an effort to fill a gap for the children and families that need the help, and by increasing space it says it will be better equipped to do so.

“We are incredibly excited about this next step in our regional growth strategy to transform even more lives through specialty pediatric healthcare services,” said Dr. Teri Wahlig, ChildServe CEO.

ChildServe says the new facility is a step in its plan to enhance main campuses in Ames, Des Moines, Iowa City and Johnston.

It plans to maintain its headquarters in Johnston.
