MOULTON, Iowa — The City of Moulton is under a boil advisory Wednesday morning following a water main break, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources said.
A water main ruptured at 5 a.m. Wednesday, draining the water tower and resulting in a loss of pressure.
While the water main has since been repaired, the affected area is currently being disinfected and flushed.
The boil advisory has been issued mainly as a precaution, as officials have no reason to believe the water quality has been compromised. Iowa DNR plans to collect two sets of bacteria samples while the boil order is in effect.
In the meantime, Moulton residents are asked to boil water that will be consumed or used in food preparation.
Boil orders often include water you use for "preparing food, drinks, or ice; dishwashing; and hygiene, such as brushing teeth and bathing," according to the CDC.
Here are some other things to keep in mind during a boil order:
- Do not consume water from any appliance connected to a water line, like ice and water from a refrigerator. Running the laundry is fine.
- If possible, breastfeeding is the best infant feeding option. If you formula feed your baby, ready-to-use formula is your safest bet.
- Washing your hands is fine and adults are likely safe to bathe, but make sure not to swallow any water in the process.
The advisory will remain in place until samples have tested negative for bacteria.
