Some Norwalk residents under a boil advisory Thursday

The boil advisory, which began Wednesday afternoon, comes after the city's water distribution system lost pressure.

NORWALK, Iowa — More than a dozen households in Norwalk are currently under a boil advisory, the city announced on Facebook.

The boil advisory, which began Wednesday afternoon, comes after the city's water distribution system lost pressure.

Now, residents in 15 homes living on Columbine Court between and including the addresses 1158 and 1172 are asked to boil water that will be consumed or used in food preparation. Alternatively, affected residents can use bottled water.

The city issued the advisory as a precaution until officials can collect bacterial samples. Residents will be notified when the advisory is lifted.

Boil orders often include water you use for "preparing food, drinks, or ice; dishwashing; and hygiene, such as brushing teeth and bathing," according to the CDC

Here are some other things to keep in mind during a boil order:

  • Do not consume water from any appliance connected to a water line, like ice and water from a refrigerator. Running the laundry is fine.
  • If possible, breastfeeding is the best infant feeding option. If you formula feed your baby, ready-to-use formula is your safest bet.
  • Washing your hands is fine and adults are likely safe to bathe, but make sure not to swallow any water in the process.
