Waukee boil advisory lifted, water services restored

The boil advisory was lifted early Saturday morning because water samples tested negative for bacteria.

WAUKEE, Iowa — The boil advisory was lifted early Saturday morning, according to the city of Waukee.

As of Saturday morning, the city says repairs to the water main are complete and all affected water has been "disinfected and flushed". Water samples showed no signs of bacteria.

In total, the advisory impacted around 1,500 connections in southwest Waukee.

PREVIOUS STORY:

After a water main break potentially compromised the quality of the city's water, some Waukee residents are being advised to boil tap water before use.

The water main break happened near the Daybreak neighborhood in southwest Waukee around 11 a.m. Thursday.

As of around 6 p.m., water services have been restored, but the boil order remains in place until further notice.

"There is no reason to believe water quality has been compromised, but in these situations, as a precaution, customers are encouraged to boil water that will be consumed or used for food preparation," the city said.

Here's which Waukee Water customers are affected:

  • West of Ute Avenue between Westown Parkway and Interstate Parkway
  • East of Ute Avenue between Westown Parkway and I-80

According to the city, buildings on Sugar Creek Lane and eastward are not impacted.

The city believes the boil advisory will be in effect "until water samples pass two rounds of testing."

Sugar Creek Elementary also dismissed school early and canceled after-school activities due to the water main break, according to a Facebook post from the school.

What is a boil water advisory?

Boil water advisories often include water you use for "preparing food, drinks, or ice; dishwashing; and hygiene, such as brushing teeth and bathing," according to the CDC

Here are some other things to keep in mind during a boil advisory:

  • Do not consume water from any appliance connected to a water line, like ice and water from a refrigerator. Running the laundry is fine.
  • If possible, breastfeeding is the best infant feeding option. If you formula feed your baby, ready-to-use formula is your safest bet.
  • Washing your hands is fine and adults are likely safe to bathe, but make sure not to swallow any water in the process.
