17-year-old drowns in Rathbun Lake, sheriff's office says

The male was announced dead at the scene.

MORAVIA, Iowa — The Appanoose County Sherriff's Office said a 17-year-old male drowned in Rathbun Lake on Wednesday night.

At 6:13 p.m., the Appanoose County Law Center received a 911 call about a potential drowning near Buck Creek swimming beach on Rathbun Lake at 21947 Cedar Circle, Moravia.

The 17-year-old swimmer, identified as Ayden Beeson of Centerville, reportedly went under water but had not resurfaced.

Deputies responded to the scene where Appanoose County Water Rescue was deployed.

At about 7:33 p.m. water rescue recovered Beeson's body from approximately 15 to 20 feet deep of water.

Beeson was announced dead at the scene.

The incident is currently under investigation by both the Appanoose County Sheriff's Office and Iowa State Medical Examiner's Office.

The sheriff's office was also assisted by the Iowa DNR, Army Corps of Engineers, Centerville Fire & Rescue, Moravia Fire Department and Mystic Fire Department.
