Five people were arrested Wednesday night after they allegedly broke into a Sloan apartment.

Shallya Oertwig-Smith, 23, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Gerald Williams, 32, of Sioux City, Robert Steiner, 26, of Sioux City, Jacob Petty, 29, of Sioux City, and Keely Hegge, 22, of South Sioux City, were charged all with second-degree burglary, a class C felony.  Oertwig-Smith was also charged with possession of marijuana.

According to court documents, the five went to a Sloan apartment Wednesday night around 9:20 to try to get money from the resident who they felt stole money from Oertwig-Smith the day before.

After they allegedly kicked in the door, the resident escaped out a window and left his infant child behind, according to the documents.

Williams reportedly watched as the others entered. The documents also said Steiner found money inside and gave it to Petty. While inside, Hegge is alleged to have picked up the child and put them back.

While leaving, the five then allegedly took the resident’s dog.

A deputy on patrol was alerted of the burglary as it was in process. They were given a description of the vehicle. Once spotted, the deputy initiated a traffic stop as it was taking an exit onto Interstate 29 from Highway 141. During the stop, Oertwig-Smith allegedly told the deputy that she had marijuana on her.

All five are being held in the Woodbury County Jail. Williams, Petty, and Hegge are being held on $5,000 bond each. Oertwig-Smith is being held on a bond of $6,000. Steiner is being held on a bond of $7,500 and for the state of South Dakota.
