FORT DODGE, Iowa — Officials are investigating after an apartment fire in Fort Dodge left six people injured Sunday morning.
Around 2:20 a.m., Fort Dodge Fire Rescue responded to 1107 Central Ave. for people trapped on the third floor of an apartment fire, according to a news release.
Upon arrival, officials say they saw heavy fire coming from the third-floor windows and a woman trapped at a third-floor window.
Fire crews were able to rescue the woman using ground ladders. Several people left the building on their own.
According to officials, four people were taken to a nearby hospital for smoke inhalation and two others drove themselves to be evaluated.
One of the injured was later life-flighted to the University of Iowa Hospitals with serious burn injuries.
The condition of that person is still unknown.
Due to the fire, 12 people are displaced. Apartments on the third floor sustained heavy fire damage, while the first and second floors of the building have water and smoke damage, according to the release.
After smoke entered the building next door, seven more people had to be evacuated.
Officials say the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
