Power in Ames restored after lightning strikes utility pole, causing outage

5,036 customers were affected in the power outage in Ames on May 2.

AMES, Iowa — Thousands of customers in west Ames were out of power Thursday morning, according to the Ames Electrics Services outage map.

Ames police said on X the outage was caused by lightning striking a power pole on Mortensen Road near Hayward Avenue early Thursday. 

The Ames Electric Services outage map indicated more than 5,000 customers were affected by the outage. Outages began around 4:30 a.m. Power was restored around 8:40 a.m.
