Man is airlifted to hospital following Ankeny garage fire

The man is reportedly not facing life-threatening injuries.

ANKENY, Iowa — Ankeny fire department said a fire that began in the garage of a house at 2306 NW 71st Place led to a man being airlifted to the hospital Saturday afternoon.

A neighbor said he felt an explosion and saw fire and smoke coming out of the property's garage. The neighbor then called 911 and was able to pull a man from the garage before emergency crews showed up.

When crews reached the scene they were able to extinguish the fire and begin treating the victim's extreme burns before life flighting him to the University of Iowa's Burn Unit.

The victim is not facing life-threatening injuries, authorities said.

Investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
