Des Moines Police Department identifies Raccoon River drowning victim

The body was found where the Raccoon River and Des Moines River meet.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police have identified 39-year-old Des Moines resident Christopher Lee Sheets as the drowning victim who was recovered from the Raccoon River on Sunday.

DMPD announced Sunday that they had recovered the body of the victim who drowned Friday.

The recovery by DMPD and the Des Moines Fire Department Water Emergency Team took place Saturday evening at the junction of the Raccoon and Des Moines Rivers. 

The body was located in the Des Moines River at the SE 6th Street bridge, police said.

DMPD and the Polk County Medical Examiner's Office are actively investigating the drowning.
