ALGONA, Iowa — A woman is in the hospital following a house fire in Burt last weekend, according to the Kossuth County Sheriff's Office.

Burt Fire Department personnel responded to reports of a house fire on 5th Street at around 7:45 p.m. on Dec. 21.

When they arrived, first responders found 58-year-old Donna Tripp outside of the home She informed firefighters that her dog and her husband, 79-year-old Marvin Tripp, were still trapped in the burning house.

Firefighters rescued Marvin from the home, which was declared a total loss. Both Marvin and Donna were transported to the Kossuth Regional Health Center, where Marvin was later pronounced dead. The dog also died in the fire.

Donna was eventually relocated to a hospital in Mason City. The Algona Hy-Vee set up a GoFundMe on Donna's behalf, calling Donna a "long time Hy-Vee employee" and saying in part, "The Hy-Vee family is reaching out to our loyal customers and the community at this time for financial support during her recovery as she works toward rebuilding her life."

The State Fire Marshall's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.

"We ask area residents to keep the Tripp family in their prayers during this difficult time and to be thankful for the brave men and women of our local Fire, EMS, Healthcare Providers and Law Enforcement agencies," The Kossuth County Sheriff's Office said in a press release.
