COVID-19 live updates: 13 more deaths reported in Iowa, 287 more Iowans test positive

Latest facts from the Iowa Dept. of Public Health: 11,959 Iowans test positive, 62,215 test negative, and a total of 265 Iowans died as of Sunday morning.

Friday marked the partial reopening of several businesses across the entire state of Iowa. That's because of Gov. Kim Reynolds' latest public health proclamation.

Campgrounds, drive-in movie theaters and tanning facilities can reopen their doors in all of Iowa's 99 counties with certain restrictions.

The 22 counties that were under coronavirus restrictions will also be able to reopen gyms, malls and other retail establishments.

According to data released Sunday morning from the Iowa Dept. of Public Health, 11,959 Iowans have tested positive for COVID-19 and 265 have died.

Over 62,000 Iowan's have tested negative. A total of 74,174 Iowans have been tested, or 1-in-41.

Iowa is 1 of 6 states receiving remdesivir, a COVID-19 treatment

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced Saturday that Iowa is one of six states that will receive an allocation of the coronavirus drug remdesivir.

Starting Thursday night, cases of the drug were sent to Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan and New Jersey. Iowa will be receiving 10 cases of the drug. Each case contains 40 vials.

The FDA allowed the emergency use of remdesivir for COVID-19 in-patients in the hospital after a study found it can shorten recovery time by 31%.

13 more dead, 287 more test positive in Iowa

The Iowa Dept. of Public Health reported another 13 deaths on Sunday. An additional 287 Iowans tested positive for the virus as well. 

Data on the IDPH's coronavirus website says 1-in-41 Iowans have been tested for the virus. It also shows 1-in-260 tests have come back positive.

A total of 5,154 Iowans have recovered from COVID-19. The recovery rate sits around 43%.

3 Iowans test negative for virus, waited 14 days for TestIowa results

Two Iowans waiting for their TestIowa results got them back two weeks after being tested, according to Local 5's Rachel Droze. Their results were negative.

Both were tested on April 25 at a TestIowa site. Results are supposed to take 72 hours. The state said they had a backlog of sample to process, however they said they resolved the issue on Tuesday.

Later Saturday evening, another Iowan stepped forward and said they finally got their results. That's three Iowans that waited two weeks for their TestIowa results.

Iowa DHS testing all Woodward Resource Center staff after 2 more staff, 1 resident test positive

The Iowa Department of Human Services is in the process of testing every staff member at the Woodward Resource Center after two more staff members and one more resident tested positive for COVID-19.

According to Matt Highland with DHS, all 129 residents on campus at the state-run center were all tested for the virus. A release from DHS said they were tested on Wednesday, May 6. 

Results for 125 residents have come back so far. All came back negative except for one. The total number of residents to test positive at WRC is nine as of Saturday.

Iowa State University holds virtual commencement

Nearly 5,100 students will graduate from Iowa State University this weekend. COVID-19 has prevented any celebrations on campus, however university leaders have invited graduates and their families to enjoy one of three virtual commencement ceremonies to honor them.

The three events, for undergraduates, graduate students and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) recipients, all go live at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 9, on the registrar's virtual graduation website
