Cyclone, Hawkeye fans cheer on their teams at Cowles Commons

In the first half cheers mostly came from Hawkeye fans, but that shifted in the second half as the Cyclones started to take the lead.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Hundreds of fans came together at Cowles Commons to cheer on their team for one of the biggest games in Iowa

It’s a game that even has some households divided.

“I want to see a Hawkeye win,” Jana Dunt said.

Jana’s husband Dean Dunt is a Cyclone fan.

“I just hope that Iowa State keeps up with a good game,” Dean said.

During the first half, cheers came from Hawkeye fans while Cyclone fans felt frustration. However, in the second half more celebration came from Cyclone fans as Iowa State started scoring.

“It’s nice being in a good environment where you can cheer when there’s a first down, cheer when there’s a touchdown or feel really bad when there’s a touchdown,” Cyclones fan Cyote Williams said.

Even the youngest of fans chose a team for the cross-state rivalry game. Lydia Caraveo dressed her children in Hawkeye gear.

“My husband is an Iowa State fan,” Caraveo said. “I went to Iowa and basically I hid the Iowa State gear so they had to wear Iowa.”

With a win for the Cyclones, there’s growing excitement among Iowa State fans about what the rest of the season could look like.

“I like Iowa State because I feel like they’re always the underdogs,” Cyclones fan Charlinn Reeves said. “I’ve always been an Iowa State fan because Iowa gets too much attention.”
