DES MOINES, Iowa — A Polk County jury convicted a Des Moines man of first-degree murder Friday in connection to a 2021 fatal shooting.
29-year-old Darren Antwon Diggs was found guilty of killing 21-year-old Kalvyn Kline on Oct. 22, 2021, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
Police responded to reports of gunshots shortly after 5:30 a.m. the day of Kline's death. When they arrived on scene, they found Kline with multiple gunshot wounds. Kline died at the scene.
An investigation revealed Kline had called Diggs to buy Xanax shortly before he was shot. In addition, video showed a man resembling Diggs leaving the scene of the crime.
Evidence indicated Diggs shot Kline multiple times in the head and chest. Bullet projectiles and shell casings matching Diggs' handgun were found at the scene.
Diggs also told police "inconsistent statements" about his actions the morning of Kline's murder.
The jury deliberated for a day, returning the verdict on Friday at noon.
First-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison in Iowa.
