Des Moines Community Playhouse completes renovations ahead of 100th season

Renovations are wrapping up at the Des Moines Community Playhouse just in time for the kickoff of the theater’s 100th season.

Renovations are wrapping up at the Des Moines Community Playhouse just in time for the kickoff of the theater’s 100th season.

The project began back in the spring and has been underway for the last several months.

Just about everything has had some kind of overhaul, from the seating, to the lobby– and a new catwalk has been put in as well.

In total, the renovations cost about $4 Million with most of the money coming from private donations and sponsors.

Playhouse organizers say the upgrades will make a significant difference in the overall theater experience.

“When you’re watching a show and you look around and see paint peeling and you feel uncomfortable in the seats, and everything just doesn’t look clean… you say to yourself, well maybe the quality of the production just isn’t the same. But when you walk into an absolutely gorgeous facility, you set yourself down and you’re ready to watch the highest quality show you possibly can,” says David Kilpatrick, Executive Director for the Des Moines Community Playhouse.

There will be a special sneak preview over the weekend, and the general public will get to see the upgrades in just a few weeks with the opening of Billy Elliot: The Musical.

That show opens on October 5. For more information on the upcoming season at the Playhouse, click here.
