First responders rescue 7 people from Des Moines River Monday night

The incident occurred off the I-235 bridge over the river just before 10:40 p.m.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Seven people safely made it to shore after a water rescue late Monday night, a representative for the Des Moines Fire Department told Local 5.

WET teams with the Des Moines Fire Department responded to reports of an overturned fishing boat in the Des Moines River at around 10:30 p.m. The incident occurred off the I-235 bridge, near the Center Street Dam. 

Seven passengers were in the water after the boat overturned. One person made it to shore on their own, while the other six passengers were rescued by police and fire crews. 

"Thanks go out to the DMPD officers on the scene and our special operations team members who train for emergency situations like this," the Des Moines Fire Department said on X. "Your swift responses ensured that no lives were lost in this incident."
