DEXTER, Iowa — UPDATE: The city of Dexter says the water line repair is complete. However, Dexter residents are asked to remain on the water conservation plan and a boil order until further notice.

Original story:

The city of Dexter has enacted Stage 3 of a water conservation plan due to an ongoing water line repair, the city said on Facebook.

The plan was initially enacted on Thursday at 8 a.m. so crews could repair a leaking valve on the water line. Initially, the city said the plan would only last a day, but repairs are ongoing as of 2:45 p.m. Friday.

The city says they are hoping to resolve the issue "as diligently and quickly as possible." While repairs continue, residents are asked to only use necessary water.

Under Stage 3 of the water conservation plan, the following restrictions apply to all residents, with some exceptions:

  • No outdoor irrigation outside of the hours 11 p.m. to 9 a.m.
  • No washing cars, boats trucks, trailers etc. unless at a designated car wash
  • No filling, refilling or adding water to outdoor swimming pools, wading pools or spas
  • No washing down sidewalks, driveways or other paved areas
  • Use of fire hydrants is limited to firefighting and other activities related to health and safety

Some Dexter residents may be without water during the water main repair. In particular, the city notes the following areas may experience service interruptions:

  • Any location north or south of State Street
  • Any location west of City Hall
  • Warren Street
  • Lyon Street
  • Del Rio Road

Dexter residents who have their water shut off during repair will be placed under a boil order. Under a boil order, residents are asked not to drink or use tap water for cooking before it has been boiled. Water should be boiled for one minute and be allowed to cool before using. Alternatively, residents can use bottled water.

"Further information and a discontinuation notice for the water conservation plan, stage 3 will be posted at Casey’s, the Library, the Post Office, City Hall, and the City of Dexter Facebook page," the city said on Facebook.
