Large grass fire in south Des Moines has been extinguished, DMFD confirms

With most of Iowa under a Red Flag warning on Thursday, fires are more likely to spark and spread quickly.

DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines police and fire crews responded to a large grass fire in south Des Moines Thursday morning.

The blaze began near the 800 block of East Kenyon Avenue around 7:50 a.m., just across the street from Lovejoy Elementary School. The Des Moines Fire Department told Local 5 the fire burned for 45 minutes but has since been extinguished.

At this time, the cause of the fire is still unknown. Lovejoy Elementary School personnel confirmed the fire did not impact their school day.

With most of Iowa under a Red Flag warning since Monday, fires are more likely to spark and spread quickly.

What is a Red Flag Warning?

Red Flag Warnings get issued when there are wind gusts of 30+ mph and humidity levels less than 25%.

This means our fire danger level is at a very high to extreme level. With the ongoing drought, a wildfire can easily spark in these conditions.
