DES MOINES – Officials with the General Services Administration have announced on Tuesday that the group will build a new federal courthouse in downtown Des Moines, right where the old Riverfront YMCA site was.

Right now, Hubbell Realty Co. owns the site. GSA will have to buy the land from Hubbell or obtain it through eminent domain. According to GSA, it has worked with city officials to address the many public concerns raised last year when the initial plans were released.

The new federal courthouse will “complement the character and context of the surrounding structures and amenities, interact with the Principal Riverwalk in a way that facilitates pedestrian activities and outdoor recreation, and include publicly-accessible space,” said GSA in a news release to the media.

GSA is now going through the design process. Construction on the property is expected to begin in fall 2019.
