Fort Dodge police officer shoots and kills armed man Saturday morning

The man, who had an active warrant for violation of probation, ran at the officers holding two knives.

FORT DODGE, Iowa — The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating after a Fort Dodge police officer shot and killed an armed man Saturday morning.

Police received reports of a man "exhibiting out of control behavior" and injuring a dog at a home on 4th Avenue South at around 8:40 a.m. Saturday.

When they arrived at the scene, officers learned the man had an active warrant for violation of probation with an original charge of domestic abuse.

Officers say they entered the home and found the man holding two knives. The man allegedly ran toward the officers, leading one officer to shoot and kill the subject.

Several external agencies were immediately notified following the incident, including Iowa DCI.

In a press release, Fort Dodge police said they are "fully cooperating" with Iowa DCI's investigation, writing in part: "The Fort Dodge Police Department acknowledges the gravity of this incident and recognizes its impact on the community. We extend our deepest sympathies to all affected parties during this difficult time. We reaffirm our commitment to transparency and accountability in all of our actions."
